Target Games in Primary School PE
Target games are fantastic way to develop the whole child! Many activities can be easily adapted, progressed and differentiated to fit the needs of every pupil in class. Whether it's a beanbag game, bowling, ring toss, frisbee golf, dodgeball or Tri Golf - target games in primary school PE are a must!
Target Games in Primary School PE: Building Skills and Fun
In the dynamic world of Primary School Physical Education (PE), target games hold a valuable place. They are more than just a way for children to have fun and expend energy. They are a vital tool for developing a variety of physical, cognitive, social skills and more!
Physical Development
Target games like golf, archery and dodgeball help children improve their hand eye coordination, balance and overall physical fitness. Through repetition, children learn to control their movements and aim with precision, building muscular strength and endurance along the way.
Cognitive Skills
Strategy, and planning how to hit a target enhances critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Children must access their position, plan their moves, and sometimes think a few steps ahead, promoting cognitive thinking. These games also teach patience and focus, as success often requires careful aim and concentration.
Social Benefits
A significant advantage of target games is the social skills they develop. Children learn the importance of teamwork, communication and sportsmanship. Whether they are organising in dodgeball, or cheering on a teammate in golf, these interactions build camaraderie and mutual respect.
Emotional Growth
Target games also offer valuable lessons in resilience and perseverance. Missing a shot in golf, or getting “out” in dodgeball teaches children to cope with setbacks and to try again. This resilience is a crucial life skill that extends far beyond the school hall and playground!
Variety and Inclusion
The beauty of target games lies in their versatility. From simple bean bag toss activities, to more complex skills like chipping in golf, there’s something for everyone. These games can be easily adapted to suit different skill levels, ensuring all children can participate and enjoy the benefits.
PE Planning has full units of work for both golf and dodgeball, from Year 1 to Year 6. We ensure progression throughout, in fun, engaging, and skills based lesson plans.

Games played are modified versions, to ensure no exclusion takes places, but still encourages resilience, competitiveness, and teamwork!
