PE CPD for teachers

In a rapidly rising world of tech, fast food and convenience, our responsibility to deliver engaging, active and high-quality PE across all key stages has never been more important. While CPD is vital across all subjects, in PE the holistic approach to physical fitness as well as mental well-being and social development makes it particularly unique.

The importance of PE CPD for teachers is why PE Planning now offer these CPD courses for curriculum PE.

Why is PE CPD important for primary school teachers?

With high quality PE now such an important part of the curriculum – as part of Government plans to tackle obesity, and also in the context of teachers’ feelings that children do not spend enough time in PE lessons, it is vital that teachers know how to deliver PE effectively and with confidence.

Teachers naturally accumulate knowledge through experience. But, if a teacher’s experience of PE is a few short hours of PE cover in their University years, or watching a young sports coach covering a PPA session, they will already be on a backfooting and will likely struggle to give their pupils the passion to be active.

CPD can help provide more rounded knowledge, confidence, experience and progression. Teachers can track how their teaching methods evolve and then measure the impact on their childrens’ learning outcomes.

Ultimately – a PE CPD programme gives primary school teachers clear evidence of their professional growth, and pupils benefit from more effective and engaging lessons!

PE CPD can be more convenient than you may think, and cost effective!  One advantage of this modern world of tech is that we can use the internet to provide teachers with resources, and deliver PE teacher training sessions via Zoom or Teams. This makes the whole process cheaper and also more convenient for all involved.  Take a look at these options and prices for Sport Specific Training and Curriculum PE Training.

What are the benefits of PE CPD for teachers?

  1. Teachers get a comprehensive understanding of child development. Primary school teachers need to have a deep understanding of child development – including physical, cognitive, emotional and social aspects. PE CPD provides them with insights into how children develop physically and how physical activity contributes to their overall well-being. This knowledge helps teachers tailor PE lessons to meet the specific needs and developmental stages of children.
  2. Teachers can use effective PE teaching strategies. Every child is different! Thanks to PE CPD, primary school teachers can design engaging and age-appropriate activities, differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities, and also create inclusive environments where all children feel valued and included.
  3. Schools can ensure the appropriate knowledge is being delivered. The National Curriculum for PE requires evidence of children developing the correct knowledge in PE. A good CPD programme will provide teachers with skills they need to develop pupil knowledge without disrupting PE lessons.
  4. Enhance social and emotional learning. PE provides valuable opportunities for children to develop social and emotional skills such as teamwork, communication, resilience and self-confidence. PE CPD helps primary school teachers incorporate these aspects into lessons, encouraging positive peer interactions and cooperation through group activities.
  5. Meet PE curriculum requirements. The National Curriculum for PE has requirements at all primary school stages. PE CPD ensures teachers are familiar with these standards and guidelines. Teachers can therefore plan and deliver PE lessons that align with curriculum objectives and learning outcomes.
  6. A perfect way to invest your PE & Sports Funding. The PE & Sports Funding (available to most British primary schools) is to help schools to embed a sustainable long term programme of PE and Sport. By using the funding for upskilling teachers in PE, schools gain a reassurance that their investment will help children year after year.
  7. Increase job satisfaction… And the school benefits, too! Improving skills leads to greater job satisfaction – so you feel more fulfilled, and children benefit from enhanced PE lessons. This can have a positive effect across the entire school. Building an environment where staff pushing forward to increase lesson quality is the norm means the pupils benefit considerably. If all teachers are focusing on professional development, the school becomes a tighter team with shared challenges, strengths and successes!

What is included in our PE CPD for teachers?

PE Planning’s Curriculum PE CPD programme is tailored to support schools in meeting Ofsted requirements. It also helps to enrich learning, inclusion and engagement in all of a school’s PE lessons.

We review your existing PE Curriculum and make developments where necessary to ensure an appropriate progression from EYFS to the end of Key Stage 2. After initial online meetings with your PE Coordinator, we design a bespoke PE Curriculum that suits your pupils, facilities and staff. We then provide a 2 hour online practical training session for all teaching staff.

Our Sport-specific CPD programme develops a teacher’s knowledge, skills and confidence in specific PE topics.  The training can be broken into Key Stages, or it can even be split into specific Year Groups. The training is online, in order to suit busy staff training timetables, and is practical based. These sessions can be great fun and often double up as staff team building activities!

We also have an excellent Sports Day training programme that helps PE Coordinators and teachers to deliver an unforgettable Sports Day! After an online consultation with your PE Coordinator, we then create a bespoke Sports Day programme, providing everything required for the day – including timetables, maps, scoresheets, certificates and prizes.
