Tips on Sports Day preparation

So, you get everything you need with our new CPD training and resources. What else can we tell you about how to prepare for Sports Day? Here are a few extra tips and nuggets of advice that we think you might find useful!

Build your team

Even if it’s you who is responsible for delivering the whole event for the school, you shouldn’t be alone in the preparation. Work out who can assist, and who you can collaborate with. Your school may have sports coordinators and even members of staff who typically ‘look after’ events organisation, who can all play a part and support you.

Is there a theme? Is there a goal?

Do you have anything you want to achieve at Sports Day, in particular? Is there a particular theme, or specific sport or activity that you want to focus on most during the day? Ideally you’ll want to try and provide activities that give as many children as possible the chance to shine. Liaising with other teachers may help here.

Be inclusive

And with inclusion in mind, you may want to consider activities connected with Sports Day – but not specifically sports-orientated activities – for children who do not favour sports activities. Creating banners, helping with coordinating events through the day, or even cheerleading might be aspects of Sports Day they can focus on and really get into.

Prepare the children

If the children are already knowledgeable of the activities that they will be taking part in, you will save a lot of time and explanations on the day itself. So we recommend asking all teachers to set aside some of their PE time to practise the activities. You can find easy to follow instructions of sports day activities at www.peplanning.org.uk/pe-resources.

Parents?!

Parents in school is a positive way of showcasing your school as a community, but there are things to consider, such as… Do you have space for parents to spectate? Will you offer toilet facilities? Can they take videos/photos? How will you stop children from leaving their group to see/hug their parents?

Get pictures and videos!

Make sure you document the event! Sports Day can be a fantastic celebration of your school and its pupils, and, if your safeguarding policy allows, having photographs and even video footage of the day can help reinforce that. These can be shared with pupils and parents too, and are great for newsletters and social media. You could even sell copies of the Sports Day video to parents – an extra revenue stream for the school!

Reflect and feed back

Once Sports Day is over, take the time to reflect on the event’s successes – and areas for improvement. For pupils, recognise their achievements but also congratulate all children who took part.
