Scoring

• A standard badminton game is played to 21 points (or 15 points in doubles) in a best-of-three format, meaning the first player or team to win two games wins the match.
• Points are scored on every rally, and a player/team must win a rally to serve or receive serve.

           Service Rules:

• The serve must be made from below the server's waist and diagonally across the net to the opponent's service court.
• The server must stand inside the service court (a 2.5-foot-wide box), and both feet must remain in contact with the ground.
• In doubles, the server's partner must stand diagonally opposite in their service court.
• The server continues to serve until they make a fault (e.g., the shuttlecock lands outside the service court, or it hits the net).

           Rally Rules:

• Players take turns hitting the shuttlecock over the net.
• The shuttlecock can only be hit once before crossing the net, except in doubles where each side can hit it once.
• The shuttlecock is considered "in" if it lands on the lines of the court; otherwise, it's considered "out".
• Players must not touch the net with their bodies or racquets during play. If the net is touched, it's a fault, and the opponent wins the rally.
• Players must not obstruct their opponents' movements or vision.
• A rally ends when the shuttlecock touches the ground or floor, is hit out of bounds, or a fault is committed.

           Faults: Common faults in badminton include:

• Serving or receiving from the wrong service court.
• Not hitting the shuttlecock over the net.
• Stepping on the boundary lines while serving or receiving.
• Double hits (hitting the shuttlecock twice in succession).
• Touching the net or its supports with any part of the body.
• Obstruction, interfering with an opponent's shot.
• Deliberately distracting or unsportsmanlike behaviour.

           Changing Ends:

• Players or teams change ends after every game, and when the leading score reaches 11 points (or 8 points in doubles) in the deciding game.

           Let:

• If there is a dispute or an interruption during a rally, the point is replayed, and it's called a "let".

In Lower Key Stage 2 Badminton, children should continue to develop racket and shuttle control, improving control when moving around, and increasing the accuracy and control when performing shots such as forehand, backhand and lift shot. Our KS2 Badminton lesson plans for Year 3 improve decision making in game situations, allowing children to play shots and move into good positions on the court to make it difficult for opponents. Children are encouraged to work well with others, communicating and collaborating, whilst being fair and respectful when competing against others.

Badminton lessons play an important role in primary school PE.  They provide opportunities for children to use running, jumping, throwing and catching in game situations, and continue to develop balance, strength, agility and control.  Badminton lessons also give children a chance to participate in competitive games, using basic skills and knowledge to make it difficult for the opposition. Primary School Badminton is also great for promoting values such as fair play and for helping children develop confidence, control and whole-body fitness.
