England’s World Cup Journey So Far: Progress, Promise and a Place in the Semi-Finals!

Published on 14th July, 2026

England remain firmly in the hunt for World Cup glory after navigating the group stage and a series of dramatic knockout matches, but their campaign has been anything but straightforward.

A Strong Start Against Croatia

The Three Lions started their World Cup campaign strongly with a frightening second-half performance against a top-12-ranked Croatia team.

England came flying out after the break and went on to win the game convincingly with a brilliant attacking display. It was an excellent start to the tournament and showed exactly what this England side can produce when they play with confidence and intensity.

Frustration Against Ghana

England’s second group match, however, was best described as frustrating.

The team played with no real fluidity and struggled to find any convincing patterns of play, resulting in a goalless draw against a stubborn Ghana side.

It was a disappointing performance after the excitement of the opening game, and it left supporters hoping to see a much-improved display in the final group match.

Bellingham Inspires England Against Panama

The final group game found England up against a resilient Panama team.

Although they had already been eliminated from the World Cup, Panama showed real desire to cause an upset. However, Thomas Tuchel’s side prevailed thanks to a Jude Bellingham masterclass.

Bellingham created one goal and also scored one himself, helping England finish top of the group with seven points.

Captain Kane Rescues England Against DR Congo

A wake-up call in the Round of 32 left England on the brink of defeat against DR Congo.

England found themselves one goal behind before a brilliant final 15 minutes from captain Harry Kane. Kane scored two late goals to overturn the deficit and make the final score 2–1.

The goals took his tournament tally to five and sent England through to the last 16.

Job done!

England Survive an Azteca Thriller

England then faced Mexico in the last 16 at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

Many saw Mexico as the favourites due to the intense humidity, the support of the home crowd and their fantastic record at the stadium. England knew they would need to produce one of their best performances of the tournament.

The Three Lions made an excellent start, with two quick goals from Jude Bellingham before Harry Kane added another from the penalty spot.

Mexico fought back and made the final stages extremely uncomfortable, but England held on to win a thrilling match 3–2.

It may not have been the complete 90-minute performance supporters had been waiting for, but England showed determination and resilience to overcome one of the host nations and reach the quarter-finals.

Bellingham Sends England Into the Semi-Finals

England’s quarter-final opponents were Norway, with dangerous players such as Erling Haaland providing another major test for Tuchel’s team.

Norway took the lead through Andreas Schjelderup, leaving England with another difficult challenge to overcome.

Once again, Jude Bellingham stepped up when his country needed him most. He scored the equaliser before finding the net again in extra time to complete a dramatic 2–1 victory.

England had done it. They were through to the World Cup semi-finals!

Can England Go All the Way?

England have not always been at their best during this tournament, but they have continued to find a way to win.

The Three Lions have shown resilience, character and determination, with key players such as Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham producing important moments when the pressure has been at its greatest.

Can England finally put together a complete performance and take another step towards World Cup glory?

Or will their journey come to an end in the semi-finals?

The nation will be watching!
