Intent
At Horbury Bridge Academy, we are passionate about delivering a high-quality, dynamic and diverse Physical Education curriculum that inspires every child to develop a lifelong love of physical activity. Through engaging lessons and a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities, we strive to build resilience, motivation and ambition, enabling all pupils to reach their full potential.
We believe that Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting children’s physical and mental well-being. By providing inclusive and meaningful experiences, we equip our pupils with the skills, knowledge and confidence required to lead healthy, active and well-balanced lives both now and in the future.
Our aim is to inspire a generation of children who embrace challenge, work effectively as part of a team, and encourage one another to succeed. Through sport, physical activity and positive experiences, we nurture confident, respectful and determined individuals who are prepared to thrive in all aspects of life.
Implementation
We are committed to delivering a broad, ambitious and enriching PE curriculum that ensures all pupils experience high-quality Physical Education on a regular basis. Through a carefully planned programme of learning, every child receives a minimum of two hours of PE each week across both indoor and outdoor environments.
Our curriculum provides pupils with a wide range of opportunities to develop fundamental movement skills, physical competence and personal qualities through five key areas of learning: Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) and Swimming. These experiences are delivered through curriculum PE, competitive sport and a varied programme of extra-curricular activities, enabling children to apply and transfer their skills in different contexts.
PE lessons are delivered by class teachers, supported by teaching assistants where appropriate, and are underpinned by high-quality resources aligned with the National Curriculum. Working closely with staff, the PE Coordinator ensures that the curriculum remains inclusive, progressive and engaging, allowing every pupil to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and a positive attitude towards physical activity.
Our intent is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and motivation required to lead healthy, active lifestyles while fostering a lifelong enjoyment of sport and physical activity. Through PE, we aim to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared to embrace challenges, work collaboratively and achieve their personal best.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is that pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives. Through regular participation in high-quality PE lessons, school sport and extra-curricular activities, children make sustained progress in their physical competence, fitness levels and understanding of health and well-being.
Pupils leave our school with a strong understanding of the importance of physical activity and are empowered to make informed choices that support both their physical and mental health. They demonstrate resilience, determination and a willingness to challenge themselves, embracing opportunities to learn, compete and succeed both individually and as part of a team.
Our inclusive and engaging curriculum enables all children to develop essential life skills, including communication, collaboration, leadership and respect for others. As a result, pupils grow in confidence, show positive sporting attitudes and encourage one another to achieve their personal best.
The positive impact of Physical Education extends beyond the sports field, contributing to improved concentration, engagement and academic achievement. By fostering enjoyment, ambition and lifelong participation in physical activity, we inspire pupils to continue leading active lifestyles and to value the importance of health, well-being and personal development throughout their future lives.
